General Information
City/Region: Pécs/Baranya County

General Introduction
Pécs is the county town of Baranya, it is the fourth biggest city of Hungary, and the biggest city in the region of the Southern Transdanubia. It is located in the south-west of the country, near to the border with Croatia.

History
Pécs was named Sopianae in the time of the Roman Empire, it was an important city of the province of Pannonia from the Ist century of our time until the barbaric invasions of the Vth century. The early christian ruins of the city are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Hungarians arrived in the IXth century and the bases of the Basilica and the city walls illustrate this period when the first university of the country was founded in Pécs in 1347. The occupation by the Ottoman Empire (XVIth-XVIIth centuries) also left traces: Turkish baths, mosques, minaret, but Islam quickly disappeared. The city mainly prospered in the XIXth century in the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; its downtown still shows the feeling of the Belle époque.

The Baranya County is very rich in natural reserves (possibility of hunting and fishing) and in thermal sources. The winemaking is an old tradition, several wine itineraries go through the County, the most famous is that of Villány.

Travel to City
The downtown area is 5 kilometres from the Pécs-Pogány Airport where private jets and small planes (50 persons) can land. From the Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, you have to drive 200 km on the M6 motorway and national road to get to Pécs.
