History
The origins of the City of Longueuil go back to 1657, when Charles le Moyne, the only Canadian-born French baron, was granted lands on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. He named his seigniory “Longueuil” after a village in his native Normandy.
Metamorphosing from seigniory to village, from Saint-Antoine de Longueuil to the City of Montreal South, the “City of Longueuil” was finally founded in the 1960s.
On January 1, 2002, Longueuil turned a historic page when a new city was born from the merger of eight cities.
In January 2006, this territory was reorganized, creating the Agglomération of the City of Longueuil together with the cities of Boucherville, Brossard, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Saint-Lambert. Greenfield Park, Saint-Hubert, Vieux-Longueuil (old cities of Longueuil and Lemoyne) are still boroughs of the centre-city of Longueuil.
In the past, all these municipalities co-operated closely together to develop joint services, especially for mass transit and water treatment. All these cities are still linked together in what is now the Agglomération de Longueuil for which Ville de Longueuil is the centre city.

Economy
Longueuil is an integral part of Greater Montreal, known for its affordable cost of living – in fact, according to a study by Union des Banques Suisses, Montreal has the lowest cost of living of any large city in North America. Employers’ contribution to employee fringe benefit plans is lower than in many industrialized countries. Thus, fringe benefits in the U.S. represent 25.5% of total pay, compared with 22.7% in Quebec.
Longueuil firms benefit from a stable, skilled labour force, and this gives them a significant competitive edge in terms of costs, particularly compared with the U.S., where the labour force is highly mobile. In Longueuil, 48% of the population are postsecondary graduates (13 or more years of schooling) and 28% are university graduates.
Some strategic clusters are obvious, and specific to Longueuil’s industrial fabric, such as aerospace and land transportation, the agri food industry and the value-added logistics and distribution industry. Other clusters are emerging, and the first elements are already in place, mainly nanotechnology related to new industrial materials, the film industry and information technology.
